PNW Global Donors Conference - Friday, May 4th

The 3rd annual Pacific NW Global Donors Conference is happening on Friday, May 4, 2012 at the Best Western Executive Inn (under the Space Needle in Seattle!).

Keynote speakers include Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen, author of Giving 2.0: Transform Your Giving and Our World and Chimamanda Adichie, Nigerian author of Purple Hibiscus, The Thing Around Your Neck, and Half of a Yellow Sun.

This half-day conference is designed expressly for Northwest grantmakers and philanthropists active and/or curious about global philanthropy, with a particular focus on next-gen attendees!

3.26: EPIP Seattle & TFN Funders Mixer & Dinner

In conjunction with the TFN conference coming to Seattle, WA on March 26-28, EPIP Seattle is planning a special funders mixer and dinner for all interested EPIP Seattle members. This will be a chance to mix and mingle not just with your fellow EPIPers, but with TFN conference attendees (i.e. a variety of funders from across the country visiting our beautiful Emerald City)!

The evening agenda will include an ice breaker, great food and drinks, and a brief “Get to Know EPIP” presentation by the EPIP Seattle Steering Committee. Please bring cash for your dinner and drinks, business cards to share with new friends, and wear your party pants because – hey – it’s EPIP!

EPIP National Conference Recap

Fifteen EPIP Seattle members and supporters gathered on Thursday, May 13th at the Philanthropy NW offices to hear about the national conference from four of the eight Seattle chapter members who were in attendance. Several EPIP Seattle members held a variety of roles at the conference:

• Sarah Studer, member of EPIP National's Board of Advisors, co-facilitated the opening session at the conference and Tweeted her conference experience through EPIP Seattle's Twitter feed.
• Zeke Spier, Associate Director of the Social Justice Fund NW- organized a workshop on community grantmaking models, featuring an impressive panel of speakers including Heather Miller, EPIP Seattle member and Program Coordinator at the Potlatch Fund.
• Keneta Anderson, consultant with the Quixote Foundation, tweeted her way through both the EPIP and Council on Foundations Annual Conference. Check out @QuixoteTilts for some "rock solid live-Tweeting".

The EPIP conference featured an impressive array of social media tools that were used to share the conference experience with those who were unable to attend. In addition to the live stream from JustGoodTV, consultants were on hand to assist conference attendees in connecting their own blogs, Facebook, and Twitter to the conversation.

Professional Development Scholarship Fund- Deadline Extended!

**DEADLINE FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND EXTENDED!!

Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) has extended its Spring/Summer Cycle for the 2010 EPIP Professional Development Fund (PDF).

The new deadline is FRIDAY, MARCH 5.

The Professional Development Fund is a scholarship program designed to increase access to professional development opportunities for young people of color working in the foundation field. PDF is specifically intended to support young people of color, reflecting EPIP's emphasis on ensuring racial diversity within our next-generation work. Recipients must use the award to attend philanthropy conferences and to network and learn from peers and senior colleagues.


:: Partial funding to attend philanthropy conferences and trainings (max $1,000 per conference)

:: Leveraging additional support for awardees from employers and conference sponsors

:: Annual awardee convening to provide skills-training, reflection on practice, inter-generational learning, and peer-networking

:: A growing peer-support network of PDF awardees and other young people of color in the foundation field

Cycle Deadlines
Spring 2009 – March 1, 2010
Fall - June 18, 2010

PDF Scholarships are a benefit of EPIP membership. If you are not yet an EPIP member, you may apply for membership simultaneously as you submit this PDF application. EPIP members from outside the U.S. are also eligible to apply, although they should be considered people of color or minorities in their home countries.

EPIP Professional Development Fund was launched in 2005 and is made possible by ongoing support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.

HH Recap: Tutta Bella Edition!

Many thanks to everyone who came out to our happy hour event at Tutta Bella last Thursday night. We convened to discuss social media once again - answering questions about Twitter, why a foundation might use social media, etc.

Among the questions we tried to tackle:

Q: Why would a foundation want to use social media?
A: To connect grantees with one another? To share information with other foundations? For transparency reasons? To make the foundation more accessible?

We were joined by several new faces, and we spent a lot of time discussing inter-generational issues in the workplace and at conferences. A couple people had recently observed that they were among the only young attendees at a recent conference and they felt slightly out of place - wondering what questions were appropriate to ask, looking up different field-lingo acronyms. Their solution? Post a flyer and host an impromptu EPIP gathering:
